John and Anne  (Richard's Grandparents)

John was baptised on 27 Jan. 1750 in Heversham.
His parents were Henry and Ellin (nee Bush).
The register of Baptism states Henry Mackreth of Wellheads.
This is a farm just north of Hincaster.

Other documents confuse John's birth date.

In the copy of the Marriage Bond, John is described as 37 years+, widower, husband-man of Underbarrow.  This gives his birth date about 1742. Anne is described as 27 years old with a birth date of 1752.  He signs the bond with a cross.
The marriage is recorded (ref. Fawcettconnections) as follows:
St John, Old Hutton, Westmorland 16 May 1779
John Mackerath of Underbarrow and Ann Hine of this Township were married in this Chapel by Licence this 16th Day of May 1779 by me N: Shepherd Curate.
This Marriage was solemnized between us {John Mackereths} {Ann Hinde}
In the Presence of {John Guy} {Agnes Scott} {Thomas Dawson}
{BT-HTK} John Mackreth of Underbarrow & Ann Hind of Old Hutton

Note the variability of spelling etc. both of Mackereth and Hine.

Anne's maiden name was Nelson and she was previously married to Robert Hinde, a blacksmith of Old Hutton.   He died in 1767

This gave her birth date as 1741.
It would seem that the Marriage Bond had misplaced their ages!

This is supported by his age at death and agrees with the Baptism record.
John was listed as a widower, when he remarried, and it seems that he married Elizabeth Swainson in 1770.  They had a daughter, Betty (1775-1821) who married Richard Bowness in 1806.

England & Wales Marriages, 1538-1940, lists the marriage date as 13 Feb 1770 at Heversham, Westmorland, England.  John would have been 20 and Elizabeth about 18 years old.

She died in 1770
Interestingly, John's brother Thomas married Anne's sister Elizabeth in May 1778; whilst John and Anne married in May 1779
They had three children:
     Henry Mackereth 1780-1838
    George Mackreth 1784-1867
     Ann Mackreth 1786
The UK Land Tax exemptions for 1798 shows that John lived in Hutton i'the Hay

The UK Poll Book and Electoral Register, of 1818, lists John as living in Hutton ith Hay and having a freehold in Old Hutton.
The Poll for Knights of Kendal in 1826 has John living in New Hutton and Stainton.
John's will of 25 September 1830, just after the death of Anne, is summarised as below:

I will that my Executors shall after my decease sell all my freehold Property, Cottages and Gardens herein described.
That is to say, one Inn or public House with a cottage and garden adjoining the same called and known by the name of Bee Hive, in Stainton, Westmorland, also four cottages and gardens at Middleshaw, Old Hutton and a plot or parcel of peat moss in Killington in an Inclosure belonging to William Thompson Esq.
