Introduction
The background to the branch of the Mackereth family at Waterside Farm was compiled by Maurice Mackereth. Born on April 17 1925, he was born and lived at Waterside Farm for the first 25 years of his life.
Sadly he passed away on 13 March 2019.
We are all lucky to have known him and our thoughts and best wishes are with his family.

It is hoped that this account is of interest and serves to satisfy a curiosity for knowledge of our ancestors and their achievements.

In Maurice's words:
'Whilst I have compiled this account, hopefully without too many errors, it has been made worthwhile because of the efforts of my brother, Brian Hall Mackereth, in collecting items of memorabilia during his lifetime. I am only sorry that he did not live to see these results.
The backbone of any account like this is the family tree, and in this instance it has been established by Ian Mackereth, of Exmouth, and a former work colleague of mine, Albert Beckett, of Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire. Ian and I are direct descendants of our great grandparents, Richard and Sarah Mackereth, the first of the Mackereth’s to farm at Waterside Farm. Ian first made contact with Andrew, the 5th farmer at Waterside, in 2013. I must mention my mother Hilda Mackereth (nee Hall), because she always wanted to discuss the family origins, but like most children I was not prepared to listen, much to my regret now. Having said that, I have no memory of ever hearing my father mentioning his background. The trail starts about 1841 until the present date, a span of over 173 years during which a branch of the Mackereth family has lived, worked, developed and managed Waterside Farm. My account has been broken down into a series of chapters, each covering one generation of the Mackereth’s with anecdotes and memorabilia. My aim is to encourage the reader to go directly to their generation of interest. In addition, you are encouraged to add your own account with your family memories and add to these memories.' |
