Henry and Betty

Henry Mackereth, aged about 22, married Betty Woof, aged 18, on 9 November 1802 in New
Hutton, Westmorland. They had eleven children:

Betty died on 12 April 1829, aged 45, in New Hutton, Westmorland.


In 1834, aged about 54, Henry resided at Low Butterbent in Hutton le Hay, Westmorland.
In 1835, aged about 55,  after the death of his father, he resided at The Bee Hive in Strickley, Stainton, Westmorland.
The Bee Hive was one of the centres of of rural life.

Henry Mackereth, aged about 55, married Elizabeth Askew, aged about 53, on 11 May 1836 in
Kendal.  Previously she had been married to John Mansergh (who died in 1827).

Henry died on 16 June 1838, aged about 57, at The Bee Hive, and was buried on 20 June 1838 at St Stephen in New Hutton, Westmorland.

Elizabeth died in 1840, aged about 58, in Kendal.

A summary of Henry's Will
Henry Mackereth, of the Bee Hive in Stainton, Westmorland. 2 May 1838.
Executors: Henry Mackereth and William Atkinson.
  • to wife Elizabeth Mackereth all the furniture and other effects which were her property before marriage.
  • The property to be held, farmed etc. until the youngest children, living at the time of his decease attained the age of 21years 
  • The estate was divided equally amongst all living children.
signed by the said Henry Mackereth, in the presence of George Gibson, Edward Latham.

On the 17 November 1838, the will of Henry Mackereth, late of Bee-Hive in Stainton, Westmorland, yeoman who departed this life, on, or about, the 16 June last, was proved in common form and Henry Mackereth of Hutton le Hay, in the said County, farmer, and William Atkinson of Hay Close, in the said County, yeoman, the Executors , were sworn, well and faithfully to execute and perform the same, and so forth: and that according to the best of the knowledge, information and belief, of the said Henry Mackereth, and William Atkinson, the whole of the goods, chattels, and credits, of which the said testator, Henry Mackereth, died possessed, within the Archdeaconry aforesaid: exclusive of what the said Testator might have been possessed of or entitled to, as a Trustee for any other person or persons, and not beneficially ; and without distracting anything on account of the Debts due, and owing, .. and ...the said Testator were under the value of one hundred pounds;

John Mackereth (Richard's brother) was born on 24 December 1802. 
John was christened on 30 January 1803, at St Stephen in New Hutton, Westmorland. 
He died on 23 December 1831, aged 28, in New Hutton, Westmorland. 


Ann Mackereth (Richard's sister) was born on 12 March 1805, in New Hutton, Westmorland. 
Ann died in 1893, aged about 88, in Kendal, Westmorland. 
Ann possibly married twice, including Thomas Chapman
, in 1830 in Kendal, Westmorland..
She gave birth to one son: Henry Mackereth in 1826 
Thomas Chapman and Ann had eight children:

Hannah Mackreth (Richard's sister) was born in October 1807, in New Hutton, Westmorland. 

She was christened on 9 October 1807, at St Stephen in New Hutton, Westmorland. 

Henry Mackreth (Richard's brother) was born on 26 November 1808, in New Hutton, Westmorland.
He was christened on 1 January 1809, at St John in Hutton Roof, Westmorland.

He farmed at Docker Hall, Docker Rd in Whittington, Lancs.

Henry, aged 21, married Hannah Saul (nee Holme), aged about 28, on 18 April 1830 in New Hutton, Hannah died on 21 August 1876, aged about 75, and was buried in Hutton Roof, Westmorland.
They had four children, including:
     John Mackreth c1830-1904
     Henry Mackreth 1832-1881
     Elizabeth Mackereth 1835-1886
     Ellen Mackereth 1838-1876

In addition she had four children from her previous marriage to William Saul:
     Agnes Saul 1821
     Miles Saul 1822
     Jane Saul 1826
     Hannah Saul 1827

Henry died on 28 February 1877, aged 68, at Docker Hall and he was buried at St. John in Hutton Roof, Westmorland.

George Mackereth (Richard's brother) was born on 18 January 1812.
He was christened on 12 July 1812, at St Stephen in New Hutton, Westmorland.
In 1851, aged about 39, he was a Farmer in Claughton, Lancs.
George Mackereth, aged about 25, married Ann Ellison, aged about 18, in 1837.

They had two sons:
     Henry Mackereth 1838-1872
     John Mackereth 1842

George died in 1856, aged about 44, in Garstang, Lancs.

William Mackereth (Richard's brother) was born on 7 May 1815, in New Hutton, Westmorland.
William Mackereth, aged 23, married Isabella Saul, aged 26, on 5 May 1839 in New Hutton,
Westmorland.
In 1851, aged about 36, he was farming at Low Butterbent in Kendal, Westmorland.
William died about 1 March 1852 (estimated), aged 36, at Butterbent in Hutton le Hay, Westmorland.

Elizabeth Mackreth (Richard's sister) was born on 5 April 1818, in New Hutton, Westmorland,. 
She was christened on 5 April 1818, at St Stephen in New Hutton, Westmorland.


Isabella Mackereth (Richard's sister) was born on 9 June 1822, in New Hutton, Westmorland.
Isabella, aged about 24, married George Teasdale, aged about 53, in 1846 in Kendal,
Westmorland. 

They had three children:
     Margaret Teasdale 1847-1890
     George Teasdale 1849-1892
     Thomas M Teasdale 1861-1896
In 1851, aged about 58, George was listed as a Publican at The Beehive in Stainton, Westmorland.
In 1861, aged about 68, he was listed as a Farmer and Innkeeper at The Beehive.
In 1871, aged about 49, Isabella was a publican at The Oxenholme Station in Natland, Kendal,
Westmorland.

George died in 1866, aged about 73, in Kendal, Westmorland.
Isabella died on 1 January 1876, aged 53, in Kendal, Westmorland.

Teasdale Isabella 3 Feb. Administration of the effects of Isabella Teasdale late of 'Oxenholme Station' Inn in the township of Natland in the couinty of Westmorland Widow who died 1 January 1876 at ' Oxenholme Station' Inn was granted at Carlisle to George Teasdale of 'Oxenholme Station' Inn Innkeeper the son and one of the next of kin.  Effects under £200
Margaret Mackereth (Richard's sister) was born on 20 February 1825. 
Margaret, aged about 19, married George Westhead, aged 36, on 6 January 1845 in
Kendal, Westmorland. 

They had five children:
     Ellen Westhead 1840
     Elizabeth Westhead 1841
     Ann Westhead 1842
     John Westhead 1845
     Margaret Westhead 1847

Margaret died on 3 February 1852, aged 26, at St Cuthbert in Lytham, Lancs.


Thomas Mackereth (Richard's brother) was born on 10 August 1828, in New Hutton, Westmorland,. Thomas died on 10 April 1842, aged 13, in New Hutton, Westmorland.
