Geoffrey McDowell

Geoffrey was born in Ormskirk in 1931, to John Rawnsley and Ida Anne Mcdowell.

He first went to school in Ormskirk and then, at the age of 9, attended Hutton Grammar School, near Preston until 16 years.

On leaving school he joined the Ordnance Service, as a Junior Surveyor.  At 23 he spent 2 years completing his National Service, as a Sapper in the Royal Engineers. He served in the Uk and in Dortmund, Germany with the 23rd Field Engineer Regt..

In 1958 he married Jean Roper, at Heavitree, Exeter.  They had a daughter Claire.

On leaving the Ordnance Survey he worked for Bass and Co in Exeter and Bristol; then for the Western Times in Exeter until he retired in 1989.

Jean died in 2000.
He was a keen sportsman and, at rugby, represented the following teams:
  • School of Military Survey
  • 23rd Field Engineer Regt.
  • Exmouth RFC
  • Newbury RFC
  • Trojans RFC, Southampton
  • Clifton RFC, Bristol

He played cricket for:
  • Exmouth Cricket Club
  • Westbury on Trim Cricket Club

​Geoffrey was staunchly independent until he was taken ill at Christmas 2017.
He died in Swindon on 25 February 2018.
